From a young age I recognized the value of volunteering, however by high school I recognized that in order to volunteer effectively, one should volunteer in areas that they are an expert in so as to maximize the benefits to those they are helping. I have passionately involved myself in a few philanthropic projects over my life that I am happy to share with you.
Beginning in high school, I volunteered bi-weekly in local underfunded elementary schools tutoring young students. I quickly noticed that having specialized attention not only allowed the information to be better explained to the students, but also motivated the students to perform well. When the students knew a mentor cared and would check their work, they were far more likely to put their best foot forward.
I was fortunately able to continue my passion for tutoring in China, as I tutored numerous of my peers, older students, and children in English learning. Upon arrival back in the United States, I found an elementary school near Clemson that also needed tutors and began working with new underprivileged students.
Beginning in high school after I met a two year old with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a degenerative muscular disorder that effects infants and children, I began working with the non-profit organization Cure SMA in order to organized a 5k race. This race raised money for SMA research and encouraged individuals in wheelchairs and those affected by SMA to participate. The event raised over $36,000 in the first year.
Throughout my time at Clemson I have also had the pleasure of contributing to the Tiger Sharks ClemsonLIFE special needs swim team. I grew up on a swim team from the ages of 3 until I reached 18 so I was thrilled to share my love for swimming with other Clemson Students. I hope you enjoy perusing some of my other pursuits in my resume below!
